Superabsorbent crosslinked bacterial cellulose biomaterials for chronic wound dressings

چکیده
In this work, we present a novel ex situ modification of bacterial cellulose (BC) polymer, that significantly improves its ability to absorb water after drying. The method involves single inexpensive and easy-to-perform process BC crosslinking, using citric acid along with catalysts, such as disodium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate or their mixtures. particular, the mixture phosphate was most promising, yielding greater capacity (over 5 times higher compared unmodified BC) slower release 6 BC). Further, our optimized crosslinked had over 1.5x than modern commercial dressings dedicated highly exuding wounds, while exhibiting no cytotoxic effects against fibroblast cell line L929 in vitro. Therefore, biomaterial may find application super-absorbent dressings, designed for chronic wounds imbalanced moisture level.

Biocompatibility of Bacterial Cellulose Based Biomaterials
Some bacteria can synthesize cellulose when they are cultivated under adequate conditions. These bacteria produce a mat of cellulose on the top of the culture medium, which is formed by a three-dimensional coherent network of pure cellulose nanofibers. Bacterial cellulose (BC) has been widely used in different fields, such as the paper industry, electronics and tissue engineering due to its rem...

Wound dressings based on bacterial cellulose (BC) can form a soft and conformable protective layer that can stimulate wound healing while preventing bacteria from entering the wound. Bacteria already present in the wound can, however, thrive in the moist environment created by the BC dressing which can aggravate the healing process. Possibilities to render the BC antimicrobial without affecting...

Aims: The objective of this prospective randomised comparative study was to assess the effects of two different cellulose-based dressings and their influence on venous leg ulcer cleansing and debridement over a four-week observation period. Methods: After ethics committee approval was obtained, both in and outpatients at the trial centres were recruited to the study after giving written informe...
متن کاملMultilayering of superabsorbent polymer dressings has no place in wound care.
This article is reprinted from the British Journal of Community Nursing, Vol 20, No 9, Community Wound Care September 2015 Dear Editor, In spite of many years of research and teaching, I have come to realise that some clinical practices are difficult to eradicate. One particular practice is the use of multilayered combinations of wound dressings often made up of components with very different f...
متن کاملWound dressings.
There are currently hundreds of dressings on the market to aid in wound management. Before selecting a dressing for a particular wound, a practitioner must assess carefully the needs of the wound to understand which dressing would provide maximal benefit. Frequently, there is not one clear best choice, and it is crucial that the pros and cons of each dressing modality be understood. This articl...
